Note / The front of the coin carries the portrait of the King, outlined by dots that remind one of radar images. On the reverse side, the map of The Netherlands appears in similar relief. One also sees a modern airplane that casts its shadow onto the Earth in the shape of a historical airplane. The distance between the airplane and its shadow symbolizes the time which has elapsed.
On all three versions the typography is of equal size, causing the letters to appear larger on the smallest coin, and smaller on the largest coin. When all three coins – the largest in silver, the medium a BU coin and the smallest in gold – are placed next to each other, it seems that the position of the airplane and its shadow slightly shifts; the airplane is flying!
